Tokyo Day 1 - 17 Nov 12

Before we begin, there will be references throughout with the latitude, longitude input after the words Google Map. Just input the numbers into Google Map and it will show you the location.

While we were checking out air ticket prices to Tokyo, we read about JAL introducing the new Boeing 787 into service this year.  The price was reasonable, thus we went ahead to book the flight about a month before we flew, paying a total of S$1475 for the 2 of us.

The Boeing 787 nicknamed the Dreamliner features larger windows and higher ceiling. One other cool feature is the electronically dimmable shades.

Everything look sparkling new. In terms of comfort, I felt no difference from the other airlines. However the food was not as tasty. On the flight to Tokyo, there was only one choice of food available. Only on the flight back, we were given a choice.

The flight from Changi International Airport 1 was at 1.55am. We were there around 12 plus and was able to check in our luggage with nary a queue in sight.

Went in search of food but there were a sea of army boys, evident by their crew cut, going on their overseas trip and most fast food there feature a line. At Killiney however, there were only a couple, so we settled for Kaya Butter Toast with coffee and tea to fill our stomachs.

Reached Narita at 9.30am, cleared customs and got our bags all within 20 mins! Very efficient even though we had to input our finger prints. Bought our Skyliner tickets with 2 days Metro Pass for 4880Yen per person and managed to catch the 9.59am train. Whew!

Mitsui Garden Hotel Ueno   Google Map: 35.711857,139.778049

For the next 2 nights, Mitsui Garden Hotel Ueno was our choice of stay. It's conveniently located, just 20m from Exit 1 of Tokyo Metro Station. The room is 18m square, still small but larger than those 12m square rooms! Opened in 2010, everything still looks sparkling new. In fact, you can even see the building under construction in Google Street View!

We were to stay here for a total of 7 nights stay, which we paid an average 11357Yen per night. Do note that booking direct through the hotel website after becoming a member yields the best rate most of the time. However there were 2 nights in which Booking.com gave better rates.

From picture above starting from top left, 1. Air Cleaner  2. Face Steamer, Hair Straightener and Dryer  3. Kettle, Mineral water, Tea Sachet and Safe  4. Trousers Press

From picture above starting from top left, 1. Door with magnetic signs  2. Television  3. Toilet with Bathtub and Amenities  4. WC with bidet attachments.

There is a convenient store just across the street, as well as Yoshinoya, Tenya, Matsuya and other restaurants just a stone throw away.

Unfortunately, on our first day there, it was raining cats and dogs and we had to forego plans to visit the Metropolitan Government Building as well as Shinjuku Garden. Sigh! Sometimes things just don't turn out the way you plan.

After leaving our luggage at the hotel, we took the train to Shinjuku after getting Suica cards which proved very useful as you don't have to buy tickets for individual train rides and it can also be used to purchase items and used as payment for lockers!

Appetizers
The first thing we did in Shinjuku was lunch and for that we went to Times Square Takashimaya where they have restaurants at the 12, 13 and 14 floor. We decided on Katsukura. They originated from Kyoto and are famous for their Tonkatsu.

Crab Meat Cream Croquette with Fillet Cutlet Set - 1734Yen  Rating: 4.5/5
170g Ton Katsu Zen Sirloin Set - 2077Yen   Rating: 4.5/5
I settled for the 170g Sirloin and ordered the Crab Meat Cream Croquette with Fillet Cutlet for my wife. The miso soup and accompanying barley rice was excellent and rounded off a fantastic meal. Highly recommended. Only con was the sauce for the cabbage was not very good. Total damage was 4000Yen.

Milli Crepe Cake - 294Yen   Rating: 4/5
After dinner, we browse the Depachika of Takashima Times Square where we got a lovely Milli Crepe Cake from Yoku Moku to share.

We then shopped at Tokyu Hands which was just next door. Plenty of Christmas decorations on sale on the first floor. This store is huge, comprises of 7 floor selling a wide range of products, many exclusive to Japan.

It can get dark pretty quickly in Tokyo. Above picture is taken at 4.31pm! It was still raining and one thing I noticed is that Japanese people really likes those transparent umbrella.

Ichiran Ueno   Google Map: 35.712423,139.775085
We had dinner near our hotel, consuming our first ramen of the trip at Ichiran Ueno. Ichiran hails from Fukuoka and serves a mean Tonkotsu style ramen. Tonkotsu means pork bone and the soup is derived from boiling pork bones for hours to obtain the white broth.

Tonkotsu Ramen   Rating: 4.5/5
There are several unique things about this ramen. Firstly, if you were to order the egg, you will have to shell it yourself. Secondly, the place you eat within is surrounded by partition so that you may enjoy your ramen with minimum disturbance. Thirdly, you are allowed to customize your ramen and to this end, you will be given a form for you to fill. More on these later.

As it was still raining cats and dogs and coupled with the jetlag, we decided to call it a night, returned to the hotel and had a good soak in the bathtub.

Tokyo Japan Prelude

It was with trepidation that we recently went to Tokyo for a short trip from 17 Nov to 28 Nov12, a total of 12 days. As it was a last minute thing, we had only a month to plan the trip. Initially, we wanted to include Kyoto and Osaka in the mix but realized that it would be more fruitful and relaxing if we were just to include Tokyo. On hindsight, that was a smart move.

Yayoiken Restaurant

Yayoiken Restaurant

Date visited:  Sunday 24 Jun 12 11.15am

Read about this value for money Japanese restaurant from the internet. So on a hot Sunday morning, drove down to Liang Court and found the restaurant more than half filled, with a good portion of clients japanese.

Shima Hokke Set $12.90   Rating: 4/5
The Shima Hokke or grilled Aka Mackerel was huge, but as with this type of fish, there are plenty of bones. Apparently this is one of their signature dishes. Took a walk later at the Meidi-ya supermarket and noticed the same fish frozen selling for $10 plus! So this dish is definite a steal.

Buta Shogayaki Set $9.90   Rating: 4/5
Buta in japanese means pig and the Stirfried Sliced Pork With Ginger here comes with plenty of bean sprout. Smoky, coupled with smoky with a tart, sweet sauce, this dish really shines with a bowl of rice.

Mix Toji Set $13.90   Rating: 4/5
The Mix Toji consist of sliced beef, fried prawn and port cutlet smothered with egg. This is another delicious dish although the layer of batter was soggy due to the eggy sauce.

Their set comes with a miso soup, appetizer and rice. The miso soup is excellent, definitely a grade above those you find in food court. The rice, although good, is however a shade below Ootoya. Do note that the rice is free flow and you can help yourself to it somewhere in the middle of the restaurant.

The food here is really value for money and great tasting as well. So we will be back to try their other dishes. They have since opened their second outlet in Bugis.

Ramen Championship

Date visited: 27 May 12 Sunday

There has been a proliferation of Ramen shops in Singapore in the last couple of years. One of the more well know one is the Ramen Championship at the Iluma which opened in July 2011.

Since we have not visited the place, decided to drop by this place during lunch. Even at 12 noon on a Sunday, there was not much of a crowd. This could be attributed to the location.

There were a total of 6 ramen stores and after much deliberation, we decided to order from Bario and Tetsu.

From Barrio, we ordered the Char Shu Men.

It's huge and comes with lots of bean sprout, which my wife loves. The soup base is rather porky and we added about a tablespoon of garlic, which is free flow to the broth.

From Testsu, we ordered their specialty which is Tsukemen. Also added a side order of their All Star toppings.

You can opt for hot or cold noodles, only difference is that in hot like the picture above comes soaked in hot water. The dipping sauce is rather thick and fishy as it contains seafood, so do refrain from ordering this if you tend to shy away from anything fishy.

The total bill came to $40.15 inclusive of a drink and gst.

Overall, we rather like the ramen and the environment here and intend to visit again so as to try the other ramen stores.

Hui Wei Chinese-Thai Cruisine

Date: 5 May 12, Sat (Vesak Day)
Time: 12.30pm

Since it's a holiday, we decided to travel to French Road to try this zi cha stall. Only this shop and another chap chye png stall was opened and the entire coffee shop was rather deserted.

Young chap who took our orders

Menu page 2
Since there were 3 of us (my sister accompanied us), we ordered a myriad of dishes to try.

Signature Fish Head $16   Rating: 4/5
Braised Pork Shank $13   Rating: 3.5/5
Fish Maw Soup $6   Rating: 3.5/5
Mei Ren Yu Eggplant $8   Rating: 4/5
Bill
The total bill came to $44 for the three of us. I was told that the savory sauce for the fish head is made from vegetables. Coupled with the fresh fish head, it was the highlight of the meal. The soup (smallest size) is big enough to serve 4. The rest of the food was also really good and we'll be coming back again to sample more dishes, hopefully with more people.

It's just a shame that there are very little people patronizing this shop. Beside us, there were only another 2 tables ordering their food. In a way, it's good, cause then we won't have to wait too long when we come back!

Oh and another thing, the young chap who took our orders advised against us ordering pineapple rice or the KL fried noodle and it certainly was advise well taken as we went with 2 bowls of white rice instead. Nice gesture on his part!

Ayer Rajah Food Centre

On a lazy Sunday afternoon (29 Apr 12), we drove down to Ayer Rajah Food Centre in search of food.

Shenton Power
Mee Goreng   Rating: 3.5/5   Cost: $3.50
Habib's Rojah
Indian Rojah   Rating: 3.5/5   Cost: $8
Ayer Rajah has more Malay/Indian stores than most food centre in Singapore. This was in part due to the hawkers relocating from Shenton Way.

Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh
Loin Ribs   Rating: 3.5/5   Cost: $7.50
Had breakfast at Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh on the 29 Apr 12 at 8.30am. When we reached the Food Centre, they have already started selling. Ordered the loin ribs and waited a good 20 minutes before the food was served.

The loin ribs is their best selling item and it is usually sold out before 10am. Today, the ribs were a little tougher than usual but still very good.
Their broth is the Teochew peppery savoury version and it's refillable. You can buy You Tiao from the neighbouring stall to dip into the soup.
