Hui Wei Chinese-Thai Cruisine

Date: 5 May 12, Sat (Vesak Day)
Time: 12.30pm

Since it's a holiday, we decided to travel to French Road to try this zi cha stall. Only this shop and another chap chye png stall was opened and the entire coffee shop was rather deserted.

Since there were 3 of us (my sister accompanied us), we ordered a myriad of dishes to try.

Signature Fish Head $16   Rating: 4/5
Braised Pork Shank $13   Rating: 3.5/5
Fish Maw Soup $6   Rating: 3.5/5
Mei Ren Yu Eggplant $8   Rating: 4/5
Bill
The total bill came to $44 for the three of us. I was told that the savory sauce for the fish head is made from vegetables. Coupled with the fresh fish head, it was the highlight of the meal. The soup (smallest size) is big enough to serve 4. The rest of the food was also really good and we'll be coming back again to sample more dishes, hopefully with more people.

It's just a shame that there are very little people patronizing this shop. Beside us, there were only another 2 tables ordering their food. In a way, it's good, cause then we won't have to wait too long when we come back!

Oh and another thing, the young chap who took our orders advised against us ordering pineapple rice or the KL fried noodle and it certainly was advise well taken as we went with 2 bowls of white rice instead. Nice gesture on his part!

Ayer Rajah Food Centre

On a lazy Sunday afternoon (29 Apr 12), we drove down to Ayer Rajah Food Centre in search of food.

Shenton Power
Mee Goreng   Rating: 3.5/5   Cost: $3.50
Habib's Rojah
Indian Rojah   Rating: 3.5/5   Cost: $8
Ayer Rajah has more Malay/Indian stores than most food centre in Singapore. This was in part due to the hawkers relocating from Shenton Way.

Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh
Loin Ribs   Rating: 3.5/5   Cost: $7.50
Had breakfast at Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh on the 29 Apr 12 at 8.30am. When we reached the Food Centre, they have already started selling. Ordered the loin ribs and waited a good 20 minutes before the food was served.

The loin ribs is their best selling item and it is usually sold out before 10am. Today, the ribs were a little tougher than usual but still very good.
Their broth is the Teochew peppery savoury version and it's refillable. You can buy You Tiao from the neighbouring stall to dip into the soup.

Lao Beijing

Still have 1 more $25 Tung Lok voucher from Groupon, so decided to spend it at Lao Beijing Tiong Bahru Plaza.

Lao Beijing Tiong Bahru Branch
Starter of Braised Peanuts   Rating:3/5
Xiao Long Bao / Steam Juicy Meat Buns  Rating: 3/5
Fried French Beans with Minced Pork and Shrimps   Rating: 3.5/5
Braised Sliced Fish and Beancurd in Claypot   Rating: 3/5
Pan fried Guo Tie   Rating: 3/5
Seafood Fried Rice   Rating: 3/5

We went on 28 Apr 12 (Sat) around noon and the restaurant was around 60% full. The food at this branch is not too bad although the Xiao Long Bao is not as tasty as those from Din Tai Fung. The final bill came to 45.15 after deducting the $25 voucher.

I was told by the staff that should you order before 12.30pm, there is a 20% discount. Do check whether the promotion is ongoing by calling before going down.
